Slava Mogutin

Slava Mogutin’s fabulous book
captures the exotic nightlife of New York City go-go boys.

Raunchy, gritty, spontaneous, and chaotic,
this is a photo collection documenting New York City’s underground club scene,
and it's kinda not your father’s book of gay nudes.

Gao Brothers

The Gao Brothers are a pair of amazing artist brothers based in Beijing.
They have been collaborating since the mid-80's,
on installations, performances, photography, painting and writings.
Their works are highly political,
and a lot still cannot be shown in China.
Thankfully, they've been able to exhibit
around the world!

Mimi Weddell!

This is one awesome lady!
She started modelling and acting full time at 65,
and has appeared in ads for Burberry, Louis Vuitton and Juicy Couture,
along with scene-stealing moments in movies and on tv,
Sex & The City being one of them.
Now, at 93, she's the subject of a new documentary,
Hats Off, which has been 11 years in the making.

This dignified dame never steps out of her East Side apartment without her gloves,
signature cigarette holder - and hat.

"Oh, I probably have about 300 hats," she says.
"I think they make a lovely frame, particularly for a woman.
You can put on a simple housedress,
but when you put on a hat, by golly,
you've got a whole different look.
As long as you hold your neck up."

book of the week

tired of the whole musical frenzy?
This is a book for people who know that:
* People don't tend to die in musicals, but those who do deserve it
* True love waits long enough for an element of mistaken identity to be introduced
(especially if one of the couple is a Nazi)
* Talented women wind up alone.

we're getting it.

gender trouble

in 2006, Jean Baptiste Mondino did a photo series
entitled "Gender Trouble" for the New York Times.
Using Devendra Banhart and his band Hairy Fairy,
he re-created the fabulous look of The Cockettes.
Opulence, decadence....aah.

as a sucker for tattoos,
I urgently needed to put keith bryce into this mix.
The designer from Utah is one of the contestants
in season 5 of Project Runway.

micallef

micallef likes to play with his crayons
and pictures make him happy.
He describes his work like this:
"My work is like watching a Disney movie
which slowly turns into violent pornography".
Love it!

chris von steiner

I am in love.
This French-born artist makes the most
wonderful, fairytale-like images.
Someone please make these into wallpaper -
I want to live -or die - in this world!

The Lake

I know this is old, but it's beautiful nonetheless,
so here goes:

Movie of the weak...

Ah, who can forget LACE, the 1984 mini series
based on Shirley Conran's book.
Own this! "Through sick and sin"!

Jay Brannan at the Vigeland Mausoleum

Singer/songwriter Jay Brannan was in Oslo this June,
and during his stay he visited the mausoleum of
Emmanuel Vigeland, Gustav's brother.
The accoustic has a 12 second delay,

Squeezebox! The Movie

Once upon a time (like the mid-'90s), a party promoter
named Michael Schmidt had a novel idea:
drag queens dumping the lipsynching routine
to sing rock and roll live onstage.
No one knew what to expect when they first
opened the doors to Don Hill's
on the fateful night that
SqueezeBox! was born in downtown Manhattan.

The drag queens rocked New York nightlife
in a way no one had ever seen before.
But what began as a place for queer misfits
who'd rather hear a guitar riff
than a disco beat turned into a pansexual free-for-all.
Straight or gay. Preppy or punk.
Man or woman (or somewhere in between).
All were welcome at SqueezeBox!
as long as they were there to have fun.

Here are a few clips from the recent documentary:

Yeah, I know...it's tacky (no, it's funny!),
